Summary
A biographical comedy about real-life Polish-American polka band leader Jan Lewan, who was imprisoned in 2004 for running a Ponzi scheme.
The Polka King” is a hilariously offbeat biographical comedy about real-life Polish-American polka band leader Jan Lewan, whose larger-than-life persona landed him in prison for a massive Ponzi scheme.
Jack Black is perfectly cast as Lewan, a shameless showman who shamelessly milks his fans’ devotion for every polka-fueled penny. From his outlandish costumes to his cheesy dance moves, Lewan is a walking punchline, but the film cleverly avoids painting him solely as a caricature. We see glimpses of his genuine passion for music and his desperate desire for American success, making him a surprisingly complex and compelling figure.
While the humor is often broad and slapstick, there’s also a sharp wit lurking beneath the surface, especially in the dialogue between Lewan and his exasperated wife (Jenny Slate). The supporting cast, including Jason Schwartzman as Lewan’s clarinet-wielding sidekick, adds to the film’s vibrant absurdity.
“The Polka King” won’t be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a quirky and unexpectedly touching comedy about a real-life scammer with a polka beat in his heart, this is definitely worth a watch.
