Pros

Audio quality – This parameter depends on your expectations and the way you plan to use the microphone, but overall the sound quality the BOYA BY-MM1 generates is good.

If your comparison is the Rode VideoMicro shotgun microphone, then it is quite similar.

But if your comparison is a different type of microphone, such as the BOYA BY-M1 Lavalier microphone, then you can check my video review (shown at the top of this post), and realize what would be best for your needs.

Durability – After using the BOYA BY-MM1 for almost two years, I can confirm that it served me well, without showing any signs of falling apart, audio degradation, or problems with the connections.

Compatible with various devices – You can use this mic with smartphones, tablets, computers, camcorders, DSLR / mirrorless / other types of cameras.

You’ll be glad to know that you receive with the package two different cables that operate as follows:

  • 3.5mm TRRS connector – compatible with smartphones (Android & iOS), tablets, or Mac computers.
  • 3.5mm TRS connector – compatible with cameras, camcorders, audio recorders, and other audio/video recording devices.

Cons

The quality of the dead cat wind protector – It is not that bad, but as can be seen in the video, I managed to pull off the fur/hair easily. Although I did that for demonstration purposes only, there’s no excuse for that.

The shock mount is from simple plastic – One of the main differences between the BOYA BY-MM1 & the Rode VideoMicro is the quality of the shock mount. The RODE mount is more elastic, so it is easier to place the mic.

In my opinion, if you separate the mic from the mount often, this can be annoying and cause scratches to the mic. Also, I’m afraid that the BOYA mount eventually will break.
