One technique I’ve learned over the years is to save space by building upward – adding vertical storage while keeping things accessible and in sight.
With that in mind, I came across the IKEA AVSTEG Kitchen Countertop Rack. It was reasonably priced and seemed like a smart way to create an extra level of storage without having to buy new furniture.
This review looks at whether the AVSTEG lived up to its promise and became the practical solution I was looking for in my kitchen.

Pros
Extremely easy to assemble – The IKEA AVSTEG is extremely easy to assemble, as I also demonstrate in the video. The instructions are straightforward, the parts align naturally, and the process is clear from start to finish. It doesn’t require advanced skills or special tools – anyone can put it together in just a few minutes without hassle.
Minimalist and lightweight design – The connections and frame are thinner and less bulky compared to similar racks, giving it a clean, modern, and less massive look that blends well into different kitchen styles.
Respectable load-bearing capacity – Despite its compact and thinner frame, the IKEA AVSTEG has a surprisingly respectable load-bearing capacity. Officially, IKEA rates the top surface for up to 15 kg. I didn’t test it down to the gram, but in everyday use it reliably supported a kettle, toaster, and a small Nespresso machine over a long period of time without wobbling or feeling unstable.
Durable and solid build quality – Over the entire period I used it, the IKEA AVSTEG showed impressive durability. The frame didn’t bend or warp, and the white coating remained intact without scratches or peeling. The material feels solid, and the rack consistently held its shape and sturdiness through daily use. Overall, it gives the impression of a product designed to last, not just to look good when new.
Cons
Fixed size, no adjustability – The IKEA AVSTEG has a fixed frame with no option to adjust shelf height or width. In my setup, it fit a 20-liter microwave perfectly, and there’s even room for a slightly larger microwave or toaster. Still, it’s important to check your appliance’s measurements beforehand to make sure it will fit. Alternatively, choosing a smaller microwave or compact oven is always an option if you want it to work with this rack.
Visible welding points – The welding on the frame isn’t completely smooth or hidden, and up close it’s noticeable against the white finish. For a budget-friendly product, this isn’t unexpected, and in daily use it doesn’t really stand out. While at first it made me question how durable the rack would be, the product ultimately proved solid and reliable, and the design itself still feels clean and minimalist.
Anti-slip stickers aren’t perfect – The rack’s stability depends in part on the surface it sits on. I recommend placing it on a countertop wide enough to prevent shifting. The included anti-slip stickers don’t always hold up – in my case, they eventually lost their grip. If that happens, it’s best to remove them and, if necessary, anchor the rack’s base more securely to the countertop.
Overall Verdict
The IKEA AVSTEG Kitchen Countertop Rack turned out to be a surprisingly practical and well-built addition to my kitchen.
On the plus side, it’s extremely easy to assemble, the minimalist design gave my kitchen a lighter, less bulky look, and it offers a respectable load-bearing capacity.
In my case, it reliably held a kettle, toaster, and a small Nespresso machine for an extended period. The build quality feels durable, with no bending, warping, or scratches over time.
That said, there are a couple of drawbacks.
In terms of finish quality, the welding points on the frame aren’t completely hidden, so the craftsmanship doesn’t look flawless up close. Still, it’s not something that stands out once the rack is in everyday use, and the product proved to be durable and reliable despite that.
The anti-slip stickers aren’t perfect – probably due to the few times I moved the rack or from small shifts during use, they didn’t hold as firmly. This makes sense given they’re just simple stickers for a relatively narrow metal frame. As a workaround, I’d recommend placing the rack on a wider surface or even securing it to the base or wall if needed. That said, the rack itself always felt stable.
As for weight capacity, IKEA officially rates the top surface for up to 15 kg. I chose not to push it to the absolute limit, but within the recommended use it proved reliable. That conscious choice paid off – I enjoyed using it for more than two years without issues.
Bottom line: if you’re looking for an affordable, minimalist, and practical way to free up counter space – and your appliances fit the dimensions – the IKEA AVSTEG is an easy product to recommend. It does exactly what it promises, and does it well.
